An engaging, ravishing love story, superior battles and mysterious characters and plot. The syory is about the bad luck that happens to a young woman, Donja and her family. With the unsolved murders involving Chippewa women. The author gives readers a history lesson into the ancient bloodline.

Donja, being of that same bloodline, is what attracts the killers that want to take her life. It is obviously well researched and well written. Karen Glista  has constructed a creative plot with interesting fully fleshed out characters. The characters are woven into the plot like strands of a well-fitting garment The story stretches from murder to vampires to teenage angst. Readers, young and older, will love the characters as they are well developed and multidimensional. The dialogue between the characters, especially between Donja and Torin, is refreshing. It is a beautiful love story filled with action, romance, murder and good and bad vampires.

Karen Glista , with words that flow created a story that readers will marvel in. It’s one of the best books in its genre and I highly recommend it to all vampire and paranormal loving readers that want something of a different flavor.

Okay, so I’m gonna start this by saying I hated the Twilight series. When I started reading Chasing the Red Queen, I assumed it would be the same sort of sappy, poorly written drivel about a teenage girl who just can’t contain her feelings for the MUCH older, much wiser vampire. I was pleasantly surprised to find a little more depth than I expected as I read on, and ultimately, I enjoyed it.
Donja and Makayla ring true as new stepsisters, working through the sibling rivalry and adjustment difficulties you’d expect in such a situation. Torin is the guy you hate to love, and I found myself rooting them on and hoping he actually would be able to protect her from the other baddies out for her blood, literally. There were a few details I found silly (just call them Vampires. Really.) but overall it was well-put together and had a good flow.
The backdrop of a series of murders in the Chippewa community rang true, and I appreciate that Glista did her homework there. Although I’ve read paranormal stories set in the Native American/First Nations culture before, they’ve mostly had to do with traditional spirits and beliefs. It was an interesting departure to read a vampire romance in that setting.
All in all, I thought Chasing the Red Queen was a pretty captivating read, in spite of my initial suspicions. The fact that it was written with a young adult audience shouldn’t deter an readers who usually pick more adult-themed fare. There’s enough mature content to keep the average reader busy without it being too graphic or heavy for the intended audience. If you like paranormal/vampire romances, this is a book you’d probably like to have on your shelf.
This is a fantasy novel, and if I try to categorize it, the best description would be that it is a vampire saga with a mix of a crime novel. Somehow, the book didn’t quite turn out as I expected since I found the combination of characters and event a bit weird. There are (sort of) four main characters, the cops Torin Mancini and Gage Leblanc, and the stepsisters Donja Bellanger and Makayla Hampton who tie the knot of step-sisterhood as Donja’s mom Lisa and Makayla’s dad, Carson tie the knot of marriage. Close to the wedding, someone starts raping, killing and drinking the blood of young Chippewa women. Victims amount with a rapid pace and Torin and Gage need to solve the cases fast. But Torin and Gage are not just plain mortals, they are predators with eternal lives and solving the case turns into a personal battle. The goth Donja and the class queen Makayla, on the other hand, develop an unusual friendship, finding a common ground in the goth-glam style despite the differences.
The line of the story would be attractive for readers who are fans of the vampire eroticism because Donja and Torin have a fated meeting and get into that “desirous, beastly, oh-I-want-you-so-much-I-need-to-drink-your-blood, from-here-to-eternity” feelings. There is a pretty violent, coarse language and dialogue, which somehow didn’t seem to fit into the almost teen-like idea behind the book. That was my issue - some trimming of the events and characters might do the work.
