Thunder on the Right Mary Stewart 9780060747466 Books

This is another of the books I enjoyed as a preteen, many years ago. When I discovered her books when I was 12, I latched onto them and quickly read all those she'd published before then, including this one.

Rereading it these many years later has been a treat. I'm ever so glad Amazon decided to go with the rediscovered classics. This story has wonderful descriptions, realistic characters, and accurately portrays the era.

She was one of the first writers I read who showed strength in the lead female characters. While her lead character did have a man around (and may have drawn from his strength), the truth is, she has to brave a stormy mountainside alone to save her cousin.

This story is delightful to read, or reread, in my case. Her story is strong on suspense and much more realistic in the romantic element than most of what is written today. I can wholeheartedly recommended this book to anyone who enjoys the romantic suspense genre.

Thunder on the Right Mary Stewart 9780060747466 Books Reviews

Mary Stewart, the originator of the genre of romantic suspense, has been unjustly forgotten. Now that her copyrights have lapsed, her books are available pretty cheaply. If you like country-house mysteries, you might give her books a try. They are generally set a little later, in the 1950s and 1960s, but they are as well-written and well-plotted as Sayers, Marsh, or Heyer.
I re-read all of the Mary Stewart books that have now been released in ebook form (except the Merlin series). I enjoyed these books years ago and enjoyed them again now. Such a nice change from current writing which seems to require explicit sex scenes; in these, the hint is there and that's really all the description I need. Ms. Stewart's books hold my interest from the first word to the last. I am so happy to have them to keep.
I found reading to be fun by reading my first Mary Stewart my grandmother sent me at camp. I was hooked and read every one. I use my e reader to collect books I never want to lose but not have in bookcases and always have with me. Her books weren't available at first but once I found them, I bought every one I could find. Good mysteries, wonderful characters, spunky women and I learned something about something historic or from classic works that actually got me points in college in my Humanities classes. I had forgotten lots, not who the bad guys were usually but detail, so reading them again and discovering those things was like reading them for the first time. You can't go wrong with Mary Stewart.
Mary Stuart is a totally engaging mystery writer. Her plots are varied and always have different settings where the reader is being exposed to new things beyond our everyday life. The descriptions of scenery and nature are full and rich, as well as the development of characterization. These are for readers who appreciate good writing with thoughtful introspection as a break from action and suspense. I highly recommend this author. I was delighted to find her work again after decades to download on my kindle. I've bought every mystery available, and they are great price for the kindle version. She also writes great mysteries for children which I still enjoy as an adult, they are so well written.
I'm assuming this was the first book MS ever wrote and then published later after she refined her wonderful style. This simply doesn't live up to her standards. I'm a huge fan of hers, but this book is written in a sloppy third person, jumping from point of view to point of view. (All her other books are first person.) The story line is rather florid -- a young woman goes up to a convent in the Pyrenees and discovers her cousin is dead, but is she?
The reader knows almost immediately what's going on, well before the main character has a clue. It feels very young, and not well thought out. If you love Mary Stewart, bathe yourself in the lush prose of the Moon-Spinners or My Brother Michael. This book just doesn't do the trick.
I'm a Mary Stewart fanatic, constantly looking (in vain) for contemporary writers that can match her. One of Stewart's gifts was creating landscapes and conjuring up smells, sights, and tastes so vividly that they totally suck you into a particular book's world. In this book, however, the lyrical descriptions are allowed to run amok so that the characters' actions are like little bubbles popping up here and there in a thick stew of description. There is a tense mystery buried underneath all the verbiage that would've shone like a diamond if at least a third of the extraneous material had been cut away.
Bravo! This novel is another wonderful read by the late Mary Stewart. In Thunder on the Right is haunting story, a gothic-style mystery set at an isolated convent in the Pyrenees. Readers follow along on a mystery involving 20 year old heroine Jennifer, as she encounters a mystery of a missing girl and seeing the vision of a young man on horseback. As usual, I was impressed by the author's thorough and accurate research of her characters, time, and topic. What I enjoyed most about Thunder on the Right, was the gothic tone to the mystery and romance as well as her intelligently drawn characters against the backdrop of an intriguing mystery behind the walls of a convent.

Thunder On the Right was exquisite reading, like most of Mary Stewart's novels, it is an enchanting way to spend an afternoon, curled up reading. Excellent reading for those new to her work or already acquainted with this most excellent author.
