The Year We Fell Down The Ivy Years Sarina Bowen Books Reviews

Corey is a freshman and looking forward to starting school in a new city far from home. You see, she’s been homeschooled for the latter part of her senior year because she had an accident that caused her undergo major surgery and extensive physical therapy. But, she’s finally on her own with her wheel chair, new dorm room and roommate and life is good. Especially when her next door neighbor is one of the most beautiful men she’s ever seen!
Hartley is a junior hockey player but not playing this year due to an leg injury. He’s not happy about missing out but enjoys the benefits of a handicap accessible room. He’s even noticed his neighbor in the wheelchair and find they have a number of classes in common among other things.
What forms is an unlikely friendship born out of necessity and solidarity with being the ‘handicapped’ folks in the bunch. But while Hartley sees them as just friends, what’s Corey going to do with all these love emotions swirling around? What’s going to happen when Hartley’s leg heals and Corey remains unable to walk without assistance?
This was a really sweet story with all of the angst that you can imagine from young love and college life. I’m looking forward to reading book 2.
This book was AMAZING!!! I really didn't have a clue what this book was about going into it and I think that it really took me by surprise in the best way possible. I've just heard great things and when I have person after person recommend a book, I just go for it. I mean, where do I start? Callahan is my hero(or hope fairy). Sarina Bowen did an amazing job in creating a realistic character with a spinal cord injury. I've been waiting for a book like this. As an Occupational Therapist, I get to see a glimpse of people's lives while recovering from tragedy and thrive following it. It makes me believe that I have the coolest job ever!

This book was magical. It had all the right feels and struggles. All the right words...

"But hope is tricky. She sneaks up on you even in unpredictable locations."

" 'Everyone has their s*** to shovel, Callahan. Everybody'. He gave my hand a squeeze, and then took his back, 'Now, yours is right up front where everybody can see it. I don't envy you that. But everybody has some, whether you can see it or not.' "

"Suddenly, living my new life seemed more important than mourning my old one."

I can't wait to continue in this series and start stalking all books by Sarina. One of the best books that I have read.
Disabled jocks in love! The Year We Fell Down was so sweet! Just eight months ago, Corey had an accident and is now mostly in a wheelchair. She doesn't let that stop her from moving across the country and starting college, even if her mother won't stop fretting. But Corey is going to do this thing! She may not have hockey anymore, but she does have hockey video games and her sexy neighbor, Hartley, who is currently in a cast after his own accident. The two start up an immediate friendship, but obviously things grow from there.

I absolute adored the friendships in The Year We Fell Down. Corey becomes fast friends with her roommate, Dana, and of course with Hartley. She also eventually puts herself out there more and meets some other people when she realizes that pining after her taken neighbor is not the best use of her time and emotions. But their friendship was sooo great! Hartley is so open with Corey and they actually discuss things that she's too embarrassed to talk about with anyone. His birthday gift for her was the absolute best! I cannot believe he did that for her!

The Year We Fell Down is a feel good read that's low on drama. There is a little bit, as Corey tries to get over Hartley because he has a girlfriend. But nothing ever gets melodramatic or over-the-top. There's no stupid fight at the end that rips them apart for a few pages either. This is a very sweet friends to lovers romance, and I just adored Corey and Hartley and how they help each other out and care about each other.
Words cannot express how much I loved this book. Seriously, the book starts strong and never lets up. The fact that the heroine is paraplegic and doesn't "get better" is so rare in fiction that I can count the number of books I've read with that on one hand and still have fingers left over.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. Corey is a unique heroine in not her ways she's sporty, uninterested in appearances, and is self reliant to the point of it being a problem. I loved her. But even more I loved Hartley. He's not a true alpha male but he's definitely all dude. But that's selling him short, he's incredibly intuitive and caring and I wanted to rip him out of my iPad and snuggle him.

For me, some of the best parts were the scenes where the two solved problems, not just physical but mental. As someone who has had to relearn how to walk, use stairs, and go about daily life, the scenes of Corey coming to terms with her new normal rang true. Physical therapy sucks. Hardcore. But it is a necessary evil and I liked that the book went into that.

I could have read 5 more books with Hartley and Corey, but as it is this one will go on my reread list.

An enthusiastic 5 stars.
