Take the Reins Canterwood Crest #1 Jessica Burkhart 9781416958406 Books

My 11 y.o. daughter loves this series of books. She takes horse riding lessons but I think she'd like them even if she didn't. Before she started reading this series, it was rare that she would pick up a book on her own but she often initiates reading on her own as long as she is reading one of these books. She has liked them all equally well and said that it is best to read them in order as the same characters continue throughout.

I highly recommend this book it was so good and filled with detail and excitement! ))
PLEASE READ THIS BOOK! D
Granddaughter loves this series!
I was very pleased with the shipping and the book came in great condition!
Usually I like to take horse books with several grains of salt, because they tend to involve a lot of weirdness and wish fulfillment that I, as a person who rides horses, could do without. With a horse book series aimed at tweens, I'm even more cautious, because even authors who are experienced with horses will tend to write a total horse fantasy for this audience.

Jessica Burkhart, being a Thoroughbred series fan, could have stumbled with this series, but she doesn't. The book opens with Sasha Silver moving to Canterwood Crest, a boarding school for the elite that is in the top ranks in equestrian competition. Now is the point where you have to worry about the substance, being that this book is not only a horse book, but a cliquey book aimed toward fans of shows like Gossip Girl. The last thing we need is another book series suggesting that a closet full of Manolo Blahniks is a necessity for a teenager. Canterwood Crest avoids this easily, focusing on Sasha's attempts to fit in at her new school like a normal (albeit wealthy) twelve-year-old, balancing school, friends, a Zac Efron look alike and riding so she can get into the ultra competitive advanced team.

Unlike so many other determined yet ultimately irritating horse story protagonists, Sasha is a character that you can't help liking. She isn't devoid of humor and stoically predestined for horse riding greatness. She acts like a kid that other kids can identify with, and, alternatively, her antagonist isn't a total flat and predictable foil.

Drawbacks on the book are mostly kinks in the writing, such as spotty, sometimes confusing description and unnecessary scenes that drive up the page count and create lulls in the action. Overall, these are common to first time authors and forgivable. Jessica's humor and Sasha's quick thinking definitely outweigh any con. I'm definitely looking forward to the next in the series.
I'm horse crazy despite the fact that I've never actually been on a horse. My room is full of horse posters and model horses and zillion other horse-related things. My favorite series as a tween were even about horses (Heartland and Phantom Stallion, anyone?) so when I found out there was going to be a new horse series coming out, I was ecstatic. I then began stalking Jessica's blog and finding out as much as possible about the series until I finally got up the nerve to ask her for a copy because I couldn't wait until the release date. Luckily, Jess is awesome and agreed so I read the book in two hours, without stopping, and it's definitely as good as I was expecting.

Now on to the normal review stuff...

Take the Reins was everything I expected and more. For those who are looking at this and going "...but I'm not really into horses....", don't worry. Take the Reins is not all about horses. I felt that there was equal parts horses, friendship problems, and just being on your own for the first time. And there was a tiny hint of romance towards the end...

Sasha Silver is a character that I think most young teens and tweens will be able to relate to, despite the fact that most of us will never get to go to boarding schools with our horses. She's fun and quirky (my favorite part of the book revolves around her lipgloss obsession!) but also knows what she wants to do and isn't afraid to take on big projects. She's the one character that has definite personality, which brings us to my one problem with the book.

Each character's personality seemed to run in with the next. I mean, yes, you could pick Heather out as the nasty one but all of her followers seemed to run together, as did some of Sasha's friends. But since this is a series, it would leave nothing to be desired if everyone's personality was just layed out which makes me think that as the series continues, this problem will be solved.

I definitely recommend this, especially if you enjoy books about boarding school experiences or horses. I look forward to book two, Chasing Blue, which debuts in March.
This is a great book for all horse loving girls!

Canterwood Crest is perfect for those of you

who like horses, lip gloss, drama, and a strong female character.

in this book Sasha Silver and her horse,Charm, transfer to Canterwood Crest Academy.
Sasha is a beginning rider and she is trying to make the advanced team but it mite be
a bit tricky. her team mates don't exactly like her, but we will see what happens.
I love this book and the rest of the series it is a book that really sucks you in to Sasha's life!
Enjoy reading! I recommend this book and the rest of the series 100%!!!
My daughter is horse crazy! I have bought her most horse series, and this is by far her fav! I highly recommend for 8+!
