Sarah Thyre is a witty, outrageously funny person. Her sarcastic sense of humor was off the charts. She hit punchlines much like Rosie O'Donnell and/or Ellen, which is what I loved about this memoir. I could relate to many aspects of her upbringing.

Sarah's family was like a group of nomads--moving from state to state and city to city, which I think is why she developed such a great sense of humor. However, having said that, I found the story one-sided because it was basically about her school life from different stages, with a small glimpse into her family life. Her mother was socially aware of the planet even before it was the "in thing" today. She was light years ahead. Her father was a typical American dad, who liked his joy juice to sip and go fishing with the guys, but her parents didn't really have a great marriage, and I wanted to know why? Sarah didn't really delve into this area, and perhaps that's because her parents didn't bring the children into the fold.

I've read more exciting memoirs than this, but that's not to say this was a bad read. I enjoyed it, with the exception of the long chapters. I cannot stand long and lengthy chapters--it absolutely drives me bonkers, but outside of that, I give this book three stars. If you're the type of reader who enjoys a great laugh and family life, you'll enjoy this book.

this book made me laugh out loud - many many times. it took me back to my own childhood and made me feel alot better about the dysfunction in my family. good read.
At first, all I knew was that Sarah Thyre was the lady married to Andy Richter (who was included in her dedication) and who was the coach on Strangers With Candy, but, having read her incredible book, I can really see how talented and interesting she really is. Her writing has a style of its own, quirky and humorous, which contrasts with her somewhat dismal upbringing. Its a good read. One thing though, I fell she needed more closure at the ending, it was a little abrupt. But maybe that's what makes it unique, you decide.
It is amazing how this woman took that dysfunctional family of hers and made them all so funny. There were certaily some moments in the book when I just wanted to kick some of the members of her family for being so vile and cruel. Ms. Thyre did an amazing job of turning tragedy into humor. I was reading in bed with my husband sound asleep and I had to leave the room because I started to laugh so hard. For example, When the author was young she looked in her mother's purse and found a paper with something written on it that she mistook for a man's name.( I do not want to give away what it said.) She thought her Mom had a boyfriend with that name and she fantasized about what this gentlman's house and life was like. I am telling you it was fall on the floor funny. She includes moments like this about herself and her family all through the book.I read the book twice it was so hilarious. Her childhood was in a word awful but she sure made it a wid ride through funnyland. (I know there is a place like that after reading this book.)
I really enjoyed this book straight from the beginning. It made me laugh , feel embarrassed, and feel her emotions with her. She is a great writer, .
her story starts with a funny twist you can read in the first pages and as you get along in the book there is more. She lies, her parents become very dysfunctional/ there are siblings everywhere, her parents eventually divorce, and she has to go to public school to her horror. There are other amusing and funny things that happen along the way, things they keep from the dad, her first make out session, her first time having sex, and many more. Like I said you need to read this book I really enjoyed it.
Laugh out loud funny. I've passed this to several friends, and we have all enjoyed it. Funny and a quick read, good when you are looking for an escape into someone else's world for a while without complicated plot or characters to keep track of.

I first found out about Sarah Thyre through Instagram and found her posts to be really amusing so I was thrilled to learn that she wrote a book! This book is funny, heartwarming, and relatable. As life goes, there is the good, the bad, and the ugly and Thyre touches on all of them wonderfully. I think the thing I love most about this book is how genuine it is. She does not sugarcoat her upbringing or try to spin it to make it to be different than it was. She very simply tells the stories of her upbringing. I think I also loved this because it wasn't a memoir/self help book, it was only a memoir. Thyre very accurately touches on the pro and cons of being raised in the Bible Belt/South. I would know being born and raised in Georgia. I highly recommend this book. A quick and enjoyable read!
